We purchased this product three days before leaving for a 3000 mile family road trip vacation with four kids in the back. My wife never once had to look at a map for our next turn. This gps took us to every “point of Interest” that we were looking for. With the exception of a few small street names in a couple of small towns on the east coast of New Jersey it worked flawlessly. We took it out of the box the night before we left and were able to start it up and learn how to use it wihtin the first half a day on the road. Amazon had the best price that we could find and haven’t seen it for less anywhere else yet. This gps is a great buy for the money. I could see that the next model with traffic would be helpful on many casses during our trip but couldn’t see spending the money for that feature because we live in a rural area and never have to deal with traffic on a regular basis. We love it!

I found this GPS less than stellar. If information was input incorrectly you had to go back to square one. If you need directions to a specific
city you had to have an address, which usually you don’t have, to get directions. There was no access for example for city center etc.
I would return the item and hopefully find a better one through upgrading to different model or another brand.

I bought the Garmin Nuvi 255W for my daughter, who boldly used to drive around town on various errands, knowing how to get from point A to point B, but otherwise completely unaware of where she was. Consequently, when the unexpected trip to point C arose, she was literally lost — a situation compounded by her inability to read a map and apparent disinterest in learning despite the obvious advantages underscored by the situation. My daughter would then call my wife, asking her to plot a course using a mapping Web site and recite the directions.
Garmin stopped those calls. Daughter Dearest now carries the Nuvi in the glove box of her car, pulling it out, plugging it in, and getting directions whenever she needs, in a manner that notably is much faster and clearer than reading a map or calling her mother. It has the added benefit of providing a considerable measure of relief to a worried father.
Recently, my wife and I borrowed the device for a trip out of state. Strange city, rental car, five or six waypoints over three days; the 255W proved itself indispensable. Not long after we returned, I ordered one of my own.
The packaging includes a suction cup mount for an automobile windshield. It has been pointed out in other reviews and it is important enough that I will repeat it: windshield mounts are illegal in some areas, including the state of California, where I live. I don’t consider this detrimental to my experience with the product, since I wouldn’t have used the mount, anyway.
Besides a car charger also included in the box, the 255W can be charged using a standard USB cable connected to a computer. Therefore, I have not found it necessary to buy additional AC adapter accessories.
The Garmin Nuvi 255W is an excellent combination of performance and price point, and I easily recommend it. I’m sure its big brothers, models with higher numbers and additional features, are equally commendable, but for my purpose and budget, this model is perfect.
4 Stars Garmin Nuvi-Good value for the dollar
I bought this to upgrade from the street pilot. I like that it states the street name. It is very helpful. The voice could be better, too compressed sounding. The map detail could be better also but it works. What I do like is that the satellite reception is very good. On my other one it sometimes took 15 minutes to acquire a satellite and I live in an open area. In 15 minutes I could be pretty lost already.
The larger screen is also a plus.
All in all I am very happy with it.
