4 Stars Would be a five start if only
I did a lot of reading about what this unit has and doesn’t have, but I didn’t find anything (in the two days I was able to use it) that it lacked.

I had the Nuvi 660, and the only reason I wanted a new unit is because I’m an electronics junky. I gave my 660 to a friend, reluctantly.

The only things I find that this new unit doesn’t have is a meter to see how strong the signal is and the digital clock on the map screen. What is does have that the 660 didn’t, is the ability to put POIs on the maps. I had that with my Magellan and missed it when I got a Garmin. Now I can see gas stations in the area as I drive around. I never read anywhere that this was a new feature of the Garmin. Also, it keeps track of everywhere you drive, even if you haven’t programed in a location. There is a blue line on the streets that you recently traveled on; I mean in the two days I was able to use it. Some may not like the idea that anyone can see where you’ve been. If you clear the history, it’s obvious… so watch out :-) But I didn’t have to give directions to my dad where to pick up my grandson.. he could see the way I went to drop him off.

But… like I have read in some reviews, on day two, the unit froze and the only way to get it working again was to remove the battery. My other Garmin didn’t have a removable battery.. I’d have to totally reset everything.

I did NOT find a lack of street names, as some reviewers mentioned. I have every street labeled as I drive by. I did NOT find a problem with the volume, it’s plenty loud.

I’m going to get a new one to replace this bad unit and hope I don’t have any problem with it.

4 Stars Short Battery Life
I have liked this unit very much, however, there is something that you should know about the battery life. It is advertised as being “up to 4 hours.” I thought that meant you could take it out of the power cradle and use it for up to four hours on the battery, such as in another car or while walking around.

That is not the case. I took it out of my car to use it in my wife’s car and it only lasted for less than an hour. I e-mailed Garmin and this was the reply:

“The battery life is listed at 4 hours for the Nuvi 885. However, that would be 4 hours of battery life

if the unit was not being used at all, with all power consuming features turned Off.”

That is a pretty odd and misleading definition of “battery life”. Again, just for your information.

2 Stars one star for each time i was able to use it.
Yep, i’ve only used this unit on two different occasions, then Garmin said i need to get the latest firmware because mine isn’t working properly… well, now it doesn’t work at all. Effing POS! I’m so frustrated with garmin since every single time i’ve tried to update a garmin unit, i have this sort of problem. Had to toss my mom’s garmin after something like this, and the old one too, which is why i bought this one. I’m pretty much done with garmin now.

5 Stars Garmin 885t
I have owned an auto gps for several years. The process of getting updated maps was always slow and disappointing. My new Garmin 885t is an excellent product. I chose to purchase the unlimited map updates from Garmin and have received two updates already. The voice recognition works well if you turn off your radio and any other noise makers in the car. I live in a major city and use the MSN Direct Services daily. Overall, a great product that I would buy again.

1 Star Garmin not worth it anymore
I have had the 880 for 2 years now and thought i would write a review to steer people away from this product line in general. I would imagine the whole Nuvi line is based on the same specs (cpu, internals) so this would apply to the whole line of Nuvi products.

Overall i rate this product a 1 star and would not recomend it to anyone. I have loved Garmin products in the past especially the street pilot series which i still use over the nuvi series. This Nuvi line is of poor quality. My 880 has gone back to garmin on 2 occasions and still has quite a few problems.

My newest issue is that it decides to stop working and lock up on long trips. This happens without notice, so picture yourself driving on a long highway and not noticing the unit has stopped working. Meanwhile your turn off has long passed. This goes easily unnoticed as you only glance at the unit every once in a while when driving.

All in all, i would avoid the Garmin line and try another brand. These Nuvi units are GARBAGE. I am not sure what is good out there, but will research Magellan and some others if i were you.
