4 Stars Good product but has problems
I purchased this two weeks ago and it is a great improvement over my Mio. I like the Mio, but they have discontinued map updates for the C310X, so it was time for a change. I like the routing it takes you, and the traffic feature is a great help. It has saved me twice from being stuck in traffic jams. The only reason I do not give it 5 stars is because the screen will freeze after being on for 4-6 hours. You then have to do a soft reset, and it comes back to the correct route. I have contacted Garmin, but have not heard a reply (only been one day). I assume this is a software glitch and they will get it corrected. I have updated the maps and software and did not have any problems doing this. The lane assist is nice, but unless you travel in a large city, it is useless. Overall I will give this a thumbs up. 4 Stars Sooooo Close to the perfect GPS
Just a brief background…
I have been using GPSs for city driving for 4 years now. I normally drive 30 to 40 thousand miles per year. Mostly in the nations fith largest city and use the GPS for vacations too. I have used Garmin (4 devices) and Magellan (2 devices), and I can honestly say that Garmin is the best. However though; I was really disappointed in my last garmin because it stuttered all the time. Quick note, make sure you purchase the extended warranty. It is very hot during the summer here in phoenix, and the battery normally dies out just after the one year warranty.
User Interface: If you have used a Garmin GPS in the past, the interface will not be shocking at all. Still misasing is a short cut key to get from any screen you are at back to the map screen and/or home screen. Not a major defect, but it does stop this GPS from being a great GPS, therefore the 4 stars.
Here is a list of items you will see on the navigation screen:
Upcoming Turn Indicator – Displays the direction of the next turn, or lane guidance information when ropriate.
Touch this icon to view the Next Turn page, or the Lane Assist page (if available).
Text Bar – This text bar displays the current navigation instruction. Tapping on this bar opens the turn list
(a list of all up-coming turns)
Zoom – Touch the plus or minus icon to zoom in and out on the map
Vehicle icon – This customizable icon represents your vehicle on the map. Tapping on the vehicle icons allows you
to save your current location (even if there’s not a valid street address at your location)
Highlighted Route – The highlighted route is “painted”, or marked, in magenta color
Traffic – Displays traffic alerts that will impact your planned route. Touching this icon brings up
the Traffic menu.
Speed Limit – When available, the nuvi 765T displays the speed limit for the current road you are
driving on
Speed – Displays your current speed. Touch this icon to view the Trip Computer
Menu – Tap the Menu icon to return to the Menu page
Data Field – This customizable data field can be set to display Arrival Time, Distance to Destination, Remaining Drive Time, Direction of Travel, Elevation, or Time of Day
The Estimated time of arrival can be change to display the ETA, distance to destination, Estimated
time to destination, direction of travel or the elevation.
The upcoming turn indicator (top left on the map screen) now displays lane guidance information,
when available. Tapping this icon displays the Next Turn page, or Lane Assist page.
(The lane assist automatically appears. Garmin’s Lane Assist page also knows your current
lane of travel, and adjusts the 3-D rendering accordingly
If you are color blind, this unit is still easy to use. Unlike the Magellan GPS, Colors are easy to see, and you will not not get lost or miss a turn because of the colors used.
A quick note to mention, to get back to the main screen, you can hold down the back button for two seconds.
The Volume level is quite ample. I have some hearing loss, and I can easily here the GPS telling where to turn, and not only is the volume plentiful but the quality of the voice is pretty good. Not digital quality, but the best that I have heard.
Guidance and directions: This is by far teh best that I have seen to date. To get to one location for work, I need to drive 100 miles. The the other GPSs have calculated the bst route as bingthe one the leads straight through rush hour traffic. This GPS found the back route that I take.
Speed of the GPS comuter: The frames in this GPS are fast. A lot faster than the Garmin GPS that stutters all the time. The turns are really smooth, the look up are fast.
Blue tooth and the telephone: I have an Iphone, and the GPS connects without a problem. The GPS will not download my contacts information (bummer). The Volume on the blue tooth is excellent once the call is established. Call quality on the other end is pretty good. i would like to see better, but hey it is a GPS and not telephone system. There appears to have been and additional speaker and microphone built into the system. If you use the GPS’s integrated FM Transmitter, the person speaking on the other end plays through your car stereo’s FM receiver on a user-determined FM station. (I’ve read where people complained that the volume was too low, but they must have been using the GPS’s built-in internal speaker, otherwise the complaint doesn’t make sense.)
The best part about the phone system is the ability to call a POI. No more writing it down or dialing fromn my phone, just pick dial POI and the phone system dials.
MSN System: It works pretty well, but i already have high speed internet via my Iphone and see no reason to spend an extra 50 dollars per years to microsoft. But the PGS does have it there, it works well, but to me… not worth the extra cash.
Speed limit and car speed are fairly accurate. Don’t depend on it to keep you from a ticket, but if you are unsure, some information is better than none. i have found plenty of areas that have no speed limit listed, but on the highways, the information is there.
There is a new feature called eco-drive which “challenges” you to drive smarter in a more eco-friendly way. Tree hugging Prius owners will love this feature! Me, I like being able to plug in how much I paid for a gallon of gas and get an idea of how much each trip I plan, will cost me in gas.
Conclusion:
This GPS is pretty good. There are just a few tweaks that would make this GPS great. The current price tag of 3 bills is a little high, but out of all the GPS units I have tried, this is the best.
1 Star Avoid this unit.
Like many others, my 765T died and had to be sent to Garmin for a fix. Still waiting on it. I updated it, since it was nagging about old maps, and it then lauched into the “updating firmware” screen. It powered off, and that was it. Dead. Very disappointed in this unit. Previous units from Garmin have been much much better.
When it was working, I had only two complaints:
Low speaker volume: barely audible, even in a quiet vehicle.
Battery life: just over an hour, tops. I know, you just plug it in, but geez…
4 Stars not perfect, but works most of the time
The first unit I bought had a volume problem. The sound occasionally went to inaudible levels on its own even when the volume is set to maximum (100%). Then after a trip it would go back up to normal levels again. I exchanged that defective unit.
The traffic rerouting feature really works. On a stretch of freeway with highway construction, it totally bypassed that section of the freeway using detours. I love that feature. I assume the feature is only as good as the accuracy of information relayed to the center that keeps track of traffic information.
The lane assist feature also works, but only at a few major freeway interchanges in major metro areas. There is no button to press to activate this screen. The lane assist screen just pops up for a few seconds on its own at the right moment. Then it goes back to normal screen when the critical moment is past.
I have not been able to get the FM broadcast feature to work. It may be because I live in the SF Bay Area and the FM airwaves are so crowded with station signals that the weak FM signal from the Garmim 765T gets overwhelmed by the radio station signals.
One major flaw is the unit gets very hot on hot summer days when it’s plugged in and placed on the dashboard. I use the bean bag mount on the dash and the unit gets very hot even when I am driving with the windows down. The sun’s rays just heat it up, along with the fact that it heats up when plugged in. The high temp is very bad for the longevity of the unit. I may have to either build a sun shield or put white tape on the back of the unit to reflect sun light to keep it cool.
The voice instructions for turns frequently come too late in city driving, almost at the last moment with less than 100 feet to go before the actual turn when the prompt is issued.
The Where am I feature is great, particularly if you’re almost out of gas and you don’t know where’s the nearest gas station. It also shows the nearest police station and hospital. It also tells you the nearest intersection, useful if your car breaks down and you need to call a tow truck.
Overall I love this unit. Is it worth the premium over a 255W or 265T? It wasn’t when it first came out and the premium was very high, but now the price difference has decreased and the premium is worthwhile at least to me. I can live without the lane assist, but I find the live traffic info very useful.
3 Stars Good Nav – Screwy Touch Screen – Ad Sponsored Traffic
I’ve lived with this GPS for a year now and I have mixed feelings. The GPS functions are excellent. The included points of interest were years out of date to begin with and updated maps haven’t improved the situation. The “free” traffic alerts are ad supported so be prepared for small pop-up ads and coupon offers on your screen. The traffic alerts are only as good as the data source. I’ve had it reroute me around a major accident but I’ve also seen it ignore others. It just depends on how up to the minute the local service is and I won’t hold this against Garmin.
But by far the worst thing about this GPS is the touch screen. Touch any soft key and a semi-random number/letter seems to appear. I’ve yet to just enter an address without back spacing out errors. If it weren’t for it’s excellent directions and lane finder it would be a 1 star GPS, and if it weren’t for the touch screen problems and ads it would be a 4 star GPS. The out of date POIs cost Garmin 1/2 star. For what it’s worth 3rd party POI files make this GPS worth the extra trouble.
